Shall I break into Song?… NO!
So I recently watched a movie, and it was good. It was a musical. But I’ve got a few things to say about it. Love movies, love music and singing. But I find it so hard to enjoy both at the same time. When I’m watching a movie, something just seems so weird and unsettling when they just out of nowhere break into song. It’s almost an annoyance. Like I love the music, love the movie, but I just don’t understand them together. I once tried to watch Dream Girls… I think I made it about 20 mins in. And that was brutal! But there are many things wrong with that movie, not just the weird moments where one feels the need to break into song.
It just just me? This movie I just watched, the story was great. I really loved it. But every 5 mins someone starts singing, and I have this feeling, where I’m just thinking, be over, be over, get on with the movie already! Why can’t you just tell me what your thinking instead of dragging it on like this! Maybe I should just read the book. I’m sure there is one. Anyways, I just had to get that out. Because I almost didn’t finish that movie, I was getting so anxious and annoyed. And it wasn’t that the singing was bad, cause it was great, but it’s just not natural! Nobody does this! Why are they breaking into a duet?! Why are you singing alone in your room? On the streets? Nobody does this! It’s weird! Why!? Why do this!?

I have an unusual relationship with musicals. If someone said to me “Let’s watch a musical”, my first reaction would be “eww”.. However, there are several musical films that I actually quite like (Phantom, anyone?). The thing is, when it comes down to it, the ‘musical’ aspect of the film is essential irrelevant. The film must succeed or fail on it’s own merit. For example, you all know that I love ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, but ultimately I like it because of the story. ‘The Sound of Music’…? Pretty much the worst movie ever made. Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny..? Technically considered a musical. Technically Awesome. However, having said that, it is rather bizarre for people to just arbitrarily jump into a musical number, but I think that’s all just supposed to be part of the magic of film. Also, I’m assuming I know the identity of the movie musical you saw that you actually liked, but I got into trouble for seeing that movie, so I’m not going to say what it is…
See now, Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny was awesome, and I didn’t feel weird about that one. I guess that seems more natural for Jack Black to just break into a rock song at any given moment. But now that I think about it, maybe it’s because I prefer that kinda of music then to… opera? Or whatever style you would call it. Although in that movie I watched, that will remain unnamed, the lead woman sings very well, I actually loved her voice.
I like musicals. i break into song all the time actually. I was singing about dusting today, while I was dusting. It was epic.
Interesting… But your not exactly normal honey…
Good point haha.
First of all, the way I see it, musicals are just like any other genre of film. Sometimes they are a hit, sometimes a miss. There is no such thing as a completely bad genre, or a completely good genre.
Second, no movie is ever realistic. Is spontaneously breaking into song less believable than mutated super heroes, or undead villains, or a mystical force?
Thirdly, people DO sometimes spontaneously break into song and dance. See Exodus 15:1,20.
